It is an autonomous body responsible for co-ordinating agricultural education and research in India. It reports to the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture.

The Union Minister of Agriculture serves as its president. Established on 16th July, 1929. 

ICAR and its educational and research institutes said that “a new fish species Clarias serratobrachium sp. nov. was discovered from the wetlands along Indo-Burma border.

ICAR has 100 institutes under its charge of which 4 are deemed universities. It presides over a national agricultural research system in which there are 73 agriculture universities including 2 central and 67 state agriculture universities and 642 krishi vigyan kendras.

Lead India to attaining sustainable food, nutritional, environmental and livelihoods security through agricultural research and education.
