Zika Virus

Zika virus disease is an emerging viral disease transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. This is the same mosquito that is known to transmit infections like dengue and chikungunya.  Belongs to the family Flaviviridae

Zika virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947.

It usually have symptoms that can include mild fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise or headache. These symptoms normally last for 2-7 days.



Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC

Declaration by the World Health Organization (WHO). The declaration is promulgated by that body's Emergency Committee operating under International Health Regulations (which are a set of laws that govern global responses to pandemics involving 196 member countries)

It designates a public health crisis of potentially global reach.The deceleration was announced at three times

  1. 2009 - Swine flu declaration
  2. 2014 - Ebola declaration
  3. 2016 - Zika Virus declaration
